When you set out to make a life that means something more than a description of what you do...you really have to dig deep for direction.
You can do what most Americans do and tie it to: a job, a mortgage, a hobby or two, maybe even a church or an organization. But what fun would that be?
I want to feel something different before I die.
First, I want my kids to think of me the way I think of my folks. There can be no bigger asperation.
I am making another pledge today. Never get pulled to live inland again. I am going back to walking the walk from here on out(or in this case, swim the swim).
The Ocean...any ocean, is my friend. It is mental health. It is church. It is challenge. It is even love and heartbreak.
But its much more. It is also community. The people of the Ocean are all the same regarless of where they are from and how they use the ocean. They respect the ocean and others.
There are Ocean People even inland. They are stuck and tormented souls (I know, I was one of them). The ocean is life for the Ocean people. But the sense of community is its real treasure.
Ocean People always stop when someone is in trouble at sea or needs help. They attempt unlikely rescues that could cost a life. They lend parts and food when others need it. When is the last time you saw someone in a large city pull over and help someone change a tire?
Ocean people share passion, wisdom, safety, food, good times, and heroic moments. It is like living in a small commmunity. Everyone shares...
With that said, I am living my dream. I am attached again to the ocean, any ocean, and I will not leave its side again and live inland.
My life's ambitions are quite simple now. I want to be the next Jimmy Buffett. Yes, I said it. Now there is an expectation out there. So be it. I spent a significant time getting back onstage when the Improv Comedy Venues changed my life and gave me the opportunity to get back onstage after I left it for years. Now, it goes hand in hand with boat sales, traveling in a sailboat, boating, diving, fishing, surfing, boarding, and paddling. I am home.
Last night I was onstage again, but this time in front of a music and bar audience that did not expect comedy in between serious songs. Yes, I went from laughing and poking fun; to crying and keeping my eyes shut while I sang. I have made a promise to myself today and to others...I am going to be me again.
Chase your dreams, I am going to and now you have an excuse to chase yours.
I again have found my calling, the one I keep coming back to. I am onstage, on boats, and underwater again.
My buddy Justin gave me a t-shirt a few weeks ago. It reads: "Design Unlikely Futures." With that said:
"I want to be the next Jimmy Buffett."
