My new life goal; to be the next "Jimmy Buffett."

When you set out to make a life that means something more than a description of what you do...you really have to dig deep for direction.

You can do what most Americans do and tie it to: a job, a mortgage, a hobby or two, maybe even a church or an organization. But what fun would that be?

I want to feel something different before I die.

First, I want my kids to think of me the way I think of my folks. There can be no bigger asperation.

I am making another pledge today. Never get pulled to live inland again. I am going back to walking the walk from here on out(or in this case, swim the swim).

The Ocean...any ocean, is my friend. It is mental health. It is church. It is challenge. It is even love and heartbreak.

But its much more. It is also community. The people of the Ocean are all the same regarless of where they are from and how they use the ocean. They respect the ocean and others.

There are Ocean People even inland. They are stuck and tormented souls (I know, I was one of them). The ocean is life for the Ocean people. But the sense of community is its real treasure.

Ocean People always stop when someone is in trouble at sea or needs help. They attempt unlikely rescues that could cost a life. They lend parts and food when others need it. When is the last time you saw someone in a large city pull over and help someone change a tire?

Ocean people share passion, wisdom, safety, food, good times, and heroic moments. It is like living in a small commmunity. Everyone shares...

With that said, I am living my dream. I am attached again to the ocean, any ocean, and I will not leave its side again and live inland.

My life's ambitions are quite simple now. I want to be the next Jimmy Buffett. Yes, I said it. Now there is an expectation out there. So be it. I spent a significant time getting back onstage when the Improv Comedy Venues changed my life and gave me the opportunity to get back onstage after I left it for years. Now, it goes hand in hand with boat sales, traveling in a sailboat, boating, diving, fishing, surfing, boarding, and paddling. I am home.

Last night I was onstage again, but this time in front of a music and bar audience that did not expect comedy in between serious songs. Yes, I went from laughing and poking fun; to crying and keeping my eyes shut while I sang. I have made a promise to myself today and to others...I am going to be me again.

Chase your dreams, I am going to and now you have an excuse to chase yours.

I again have found my calling, the one I keep coming back to. I am onstage, on boats, and underwater again.

My buddy Justin gave me a t-shirt a few weeks ago. It reads: "Design Unlikely Futures." With that said:

"I want to be the next Jimmy Buffett."

Push away from the dock my Ocean People.

In my opinion

This is the world according to Garp...that's me. So nothing is ever perfect...

Nobody ever invented Wakeboarding. For that matter nobody ever invented surfing behind a boat. It just happened. Both occurred when kids got their dad's boat for the day. It didn't matter if it was a $100k Wake boat or a 21' Mako...boards were grabbed and used behind boats since the late 20's. Some people in the late 30's made them out of plywood disks and flipped the board and turned backwards to the boat...(sound like wake-skating? See what I mean?)

Until these sports were organizing they were just random acts of "I bet I cans."

But there are many noteworthy accomplishments in Wakeboarding... early in the sport, Jimmy Redmon, Tony Finn, Tommy Phillips, Todd Weatherill, Stacey McElhinney, Howard Bass, and small handful of other riders and their parents... organized the sport and many others have the bragging rights of being first to do the following:

Jimmy Redmon Made the first US shaped wakeboard and named it Redline Design.

Tony Finn Marketed the First US wakeboard and its name was Skurfer.

But the first skiboard was the Surf Ski, designed by Aussie Jeff McKee.
It was released by Wellington Puritan. McKee promoted the same design in Oceana starting in 82 or 83 under the name McSki

Eric Perez is the First World Champion.

Darren Shapiro is the first to win the US Open and took home all the prize money at 90% of the early contests.

The First Flip in a competition was done by Craig Luelen a trick skier. (hope spelled right).

Trick skiers and hotdoggers like Tony Klarich, Russell Gay, and even Darren Shapiro pushed the sport in it's early days to new levels.

Pat Mcelhinney was pulling huge 540's before anyone else on a wakeboard (but remember, trick skiers were doing it already years before on trick skis, but Pat was the first pure wakeboard 540. Infact it was a wrap switch 540).

Lance Broog was a Flip innovator from Hawaii.

The first sliders were anything in the way; bouys, docks, trees, stumps, and boats...yes, boats.

The First persons to hit a ramp with a wakeboard were almost all entirely Three event prodigy's. (ski, trick, jump). The only distance jumping wakeboarders then were Stuart Barton, Bob Welsh, and Todd Weatherill. Stuart won with 70ft...then Shapiro (trained jumper) hit a ramp and laughed past us all by almost double.

The Dirtiest grabs were dirty in the beginning too. (ala smith, nelson, goforth, harwood). Josh Smith is my pick for best early tweaker...

The Body Slide was not created by Troy Navarro or Todd Weatherill. It again, was created by a waterskier. A lot of waterskiers did it.

The first Golden Boy of Wakeboarding was Chris Coogan.

The First WWA President was Todd Weatherill.

The First Bogus company in the wakeboard world was Thruster Wakeboards...cool samples, Great riders, no product to sell; but a huge sponsor check that "will surely clear." (I mention no names because I am a good guy).

The "Dirty Dozen" which are the first professional riders actually had 19 original members but were termed the "Dirty Dozen."

Jimmy Redmon Designed the First Double Ended Board about the same time as Neptune. He also is credited with the first three stage rocker on a wakeboard. You can see it on the early Sano Boards. Again, wakeboarders were not first. The first three stage rocker was in surfing designs.

The first compression molded board was made by Herb O'Brien and his crew out of Redmon, Washington.

The first Slalom Wakeboard Champion was "Barney" Ken Bernard.

The First Finless Board idea was at O'Brien and it came from Todd Weatherill. (tie with redmon...ask him).

Surfing behind the boat is documented in books back into the 40's.

In the summer of 1994 The First Inland Surf Championships (FIST) was a brainchild of Todd Weatherill and put on by sponsor "Sail and Ski" in Austin Texas off Lake Austin. Regular surfboards were used.

The Pro Wakeboard Tour came to be through revolution and victory over the Pro-Waterski Tour trying to keep wakeboarding out, the sport's organizers, and ultimately the ski tour's demise. Wakeboarding is powerful...and organic. Why? because they said we couldn't.

Yes, Byerly is that nice...really a good guy. He is every bit of legend, myth, person, and champion that he is made out to be. He is one of the fathers.

Parks Bonifay's (also a three event skier) first Championship was in the Jr. Men's division at the worlds in Isla Morada Keys in 199...dang. I am old...can't remember the year. It is the same year Bylerly won the worlds I believe. The pic attached has him and second placed Randall "Vandall" Harris.

The first year on the pro-tour the wakeboarders had to ride and compete prior to the National Anthem...fun stuff. We faced t-shirts at the Waterski Masters that read: "Three event, not four."

The early champion for single year sales in a wakeboard shop was Tommy's Slalom Shop in Denver, Colorado and Bill Porter of Performance Ski and Surf. They both sold over 1000 boards each in 1991 (it is a three month season in Colorado).

Early in the sport; Lance Brug was making true surfboard/wake hybrids that were from Hawaii with innovator and pioneer Pat McElhinney.

The Railey came from Darren Shapiro's coaches name: Chet Raley. (also an early competitor).

The First wakeboarder that did a triple backflip was Butch Bendell. It was not on a wakeboard, but on a snowboard at St. Mary's Glacier in 1991 with a shovel-made kicker.

Scott Harwood did the worlds best glide backwards with grab. (Indy Glide)

The first Pro-tour Host on ESPN was Tony Finn. Todd Weatherill was next. Then Jeff Barton. But the one that did more broadcasts than anyone was Doug Dunbar. He hosted the Wakeboard segments on X-Games for a decade, even more for the Pro-Wake and Waterski tours.

The First Rebel Wakeboard Magazine was called Launch Wakeboard Magazine and the editor was Jeff Barton (JB).

First wakeboard tower. Many believe it was Correct Craft because they patented it. Well, the first the pros got behind was Doug Dukane's boat. He was one of the original photographers and photographed many champions. He bought an offshore patrol boat in Florida and owned an old police car to pull it with. The thing was monsterous. The thing had a huge wake, pulling from the tower up high, and blew knees out because of the killer landing. Shapiro flew almost 80 feet prior to landing from takeoff. It was a massive wake. Anyway, Larry Meddock (one of the staples at Correct Craft) saw it, liked it, and innovated the tower you see today. (His son is a huge successful photographer and former pro-rider). His design was the first made specifically for wakeboarding.

Trick Skiers, surfers, and snowboarders had a lot to do with the early trick progression in Wakeboarding.

I will write more when my old mind remembers.

The earth and ocean are more powerful than a man-made mess

Yes, there is a spill. Yes, wildlife and people have been negatively effected. I urge you all to pray for the residents, the wildlife, and the Ocean. This is the worst spill in US history. The coast will take a beating. The ocean...well that is a different story.

But I want you to think about something the news, the politicians, and the knee-jerk public has not thought of.

Oil is a natural resource. It is not man-made. God and the earth made it. Nothing man can do will keep the earth and the ocean from healing itself in time.

Think Chernobyl (nuclear spill). Think Valdease (the largest USA oil disaster). Think Husain and Iraq (the largest spill ever). Think about how man has always screwed up nature. But nature heals itself in time.

All of the events above were thought to be the end of nature in those regions.

Man VS. Nature: NATURE ALWAYS WINS...period.

These regions that were thought to be dead regenerated themselves without the help of man. Wildlife came back, fishermen came back. Nature has made all of these regions epic reserves of natural resources and wildlife once again.

Have you fished Valdease in the past decade? Have you seen pictures of the fishing in Iraq? I didn't think so.

Wait on nature. It will inevitably beat the human condition of mistake and the inperfection of public policy and lack of natural resource management we are now facing.

COUNT ON NATURE TO HEAL THIS HORRIBLE EVENT.

Don't forget: Florida still has a ton of clean beaches today on the Gulf. Please support those areas with tourism and trade. The Texas Coast has not been effected at all. Keep boating, fishing, surfing, and sunning on the beach...they are our greatest natural resource.

Let me give you some math: There are upwards of 660 Quadrillion gallons of water in the Gulf of Mexico. 660Quadrillion
If the spill lasts 120 days at 42 gallons a barrel of oil and 108 million released...divide 660 Quadrillion by 108 million gallons and you get one gallon of oil for every 6.6 billion gallons of water. That is the equivelant of four drops of oil in a full bathtub...you can drink that water and will not be harmed. The Ocean will win. The coast will however lose...

The largest spill to date that is not being talked about is the IXTOC 1 spill in 1979 in Mexico. The P-Mex company paid noone claiming sovernty. there were 140 million gallons of oil spilled and it covered a shoreline of about the equivalent of 1/2 of the Texas area. It took them 10 months to stop the leak. No cause found. It is all back to normal and has been since the early 90's. Count on the ocean to clean the world.

The Kuwait oil spill was 10x the oil of the current guld spill and deposited in an area 1/6th the size of the Gulf Coast here (persian gulf). 1/2 evaporated, 1 million barrels were recovered, and 1/2 a million hit the shoreline. It is back to normal now and one of the most vibrant undersea santuaries in the world.

Count on the Ocean to take care of itself...man vs. ocean? Ocean always wins.

Till the tail lights go down the hiway

There is an old saying in the boat-world that fits my mood today. "It Aint Sold Till The Tail Lights Go Down The HiWay."

Every boat owner, broker, and salesman has experienced the boat sale from hell. The boat can be new, used, or even in perfect shape...but something will go wrong with it when you try to sell it.

The water-test is the key to selling a boat. If it will run when the potential new owner takes it for a spin...it will normally sell. But Murphy's law applies to all boats. A boat will fail you when you count on it. It will always fail you.

Gosh, that sounds like a ton of relationships I know. Same rules apply. When you count on the person of your dreams...they will let you down.

I love boats. But they are an imperfect creature and they will fail. If you order or buy a new boat; the manufacturer or dealer will fix most (if not all) the gliches prior to you taking delivery behind closed doors where your image makes you think that you are buying a perfect boat. Be happy in your denial...boats will fail...all boats.

Some boat issues don't appear until the new owner gets into the driver's seat to take the infamous "Water Test." This is embarrassing, but inevitable. Don't get mad. Explain over and over prior to the "water-test" that boats will fail, that problems will exist, that the new owner will be pulling it back to the dealer to help illiminate electrical problems, hardware failure, bank (battery) issues, pumps, engine failure, and blown engines...yes blown engines. Relax, all boats fail, not just yours.

If you own an old boat, you pay for all the repairs. If you buy a new boat, the dealer and manufacturer pay for the repairs during the warranty period. It is up to the new boat owner to pick who pays. Their level of pain is the ultimate test to whether they will buy new and have the dealer fix it, or stay with the old boat and fix it themselves.

But you can count on one thing when you own a boat, sell a boat, or take a boat out...IT WILL FAIL. GOD WILLING, IT IS NOT ON THE WATER-TEST. "It aint sold till the tail lights go down the hiway...then, look for headlights coming back."

Hope that clears things up for you...

Living the Dream

My whole life has involved the water. I have parents and grandparents who ingrained water in my life. I grew up skiing, boating, fishing, surfing, and wakeboarding in the deepest waters and the best lakes this country offers. I have driven boats since before I could see over the bow. I have crewed on vessels of all sizes and been on nearly every waterway in this country. I prefer the ocean over lakes. The ocean is my home. While living on the Gulf throughout the 90's I fell in love with the Gulf Coast. The Gulf is one of the last waterways in America where the wildlife is still vibrant and thriving. The Fishing is second to none and the diving deep water is epic. The surf, well the surf comes and goes...don't all pretty ladies?

My biggest love is yachts. My grandfather retired Lt. Colonel Ken Patrick taught me everything about the ocean. We crewed for him growing up on several vessels including my favorite: the 40ft Ocean. She was a beautiful Trawler. In that time I learned to maneuver and crew big yachts, sail, dock, fish, clam, crab, and how to endure rough seas in the deepest water in the world (the northwest is home to the Bar which is the roughest ride in the pacific).

We cruised the Puget Sound, The Canadian San Juan Islands, and the Oregon and Canadian coasts. I love the Pacific too. It was a pirate's life my siblings and I lived. Now, it is in my soul.

Finally, after honing my skills for the past four decades: I am opening a yacht rep group on the gulf. My new business is called THIRD COAST MARINE. We will offer new boats from some great lines: Galeon Yachts, Doral Boats, EdgeWater Boats, and used boat of all sizes and brands nationwide.

I want to introduce you to my new business. With some much needed help from David Craig, a 18 year friend and associate; We are opening an office in the Kemah, Texas area off the Gulf by Galveston Bay.

Like any business referrals are key. Please tell your friends and family what I am doing. Karma itself always brings success to those who engage honestly. I am going to be the yacht brokerage that is built on integrity, superior knowledge, and epic service. My history in the boating industry runs deep with over twenty years of experience in the industry and more than double that boating. I am one of the few brokers that has done the things that most only dream of. Please pass this energy on...it will always bear fruit.

Thank you for looking and if you know of anyone who is in the yacht market, please pass them to me and I will not only take great care of them; I will pay you a referall fee if I sell them a vessel.

Putting a quality proshop together

Have you ever looked at something and said: "this just won't do." Well, when picking a spot for the next great Wakeboard Proshop in this economy; one must think of simplicity and soul over square footage. Brokership, Office, Shop...all one room. Tiny but mighty?

"Merchandise it to the hilt...from floor to ceiling. Every square inch have something to sell."

Hence, my new wakeboard proshop "Rider's Lodge." This is a shot of the inside...small, quant...is that how you spell Quant? What if it Aint? yea, made a ryhme. Is that how you spell ryhme?

I wish I could claim the thoughts above...random and brilliance. Well, those teachings are of the buddha of boardshops; Tommy Phillips (Tommy's Slalom shop). Is that how you spell Slalom?

What I figured out later is that Tommy knew that blank wall brought up the cost of each square foot and that the total square footage. Merchandised meant more profit for each square foot. It is brilliant. Top scholars teach this at the finest universities for tens of thousands of dollars tuition. Priceless education.

Have you ever been in a really cool beach shop that was empty? No, they are all merchandised to the ceiling... and surfboards on the ceiling...eye candy. The key to selling good retail profit. The other is buying right...maybe later.

If you want the most awesome shop, you also have to associate with the most awesome of riders in the area. Karma will bring them to you. Sell good stuff, pick the right riders, and you will dominate boatshows, sales and promotions, and tournaments. Again, Tommy 101.

Now, I have a ton of work to do. I am making the next great wakeboard proshop.

Did I mention I have an $820,000 listing for a Doral 52' Alegria? Well, I do. If you have outlandish money and want a boat a tenth grader can dock drunk...

Oh, my other listings are below my signature. I put them there so you can look, but don't have to. Frankly I love yachts and boats... and I am guessing you do too.

Don't forget to push away from the dock...Todd Weatherill

Offshore from Corpus

The old saying is: "a bad day fishing is better than the best day at work." Well, today was that day.

First, we arose early to calm and beautiful conditions in the intercoastal waterway here in Corpus Christi. But as all boaters know, the sea will humble you when it wants to and there is nothing you can do about it but hang on and bear it until the ocean let's you go.

Once offshore, we faced 4-5 foot swells and high winds.

Thank God we were in the right boat. We took out one of our Edgewater 268's. It helped us pound through the swells and we made it intack to the oil rigs we sought almost 30 miles off shore.

Did you know that oil rigs make great man-made reefs for thousands of fish and wildlife species to thrive? Bet the environmental whackos don't. There hasn't been a spill in the Gulf since Campeche in the 70's. Fish surround rigs. Any fisherman worth fishing with will take you straight to the rigs to find the best fish: Ling Cod, Snapper, Shark, Jacks, Spanish Macarel, Wahoo, Baracuda, Tarpin, and even Dorado. On the way out there are always Dophin, King, and ton's more.

First cast is always a measure of the day to come. Imagine everytime you drop a Snapper rig of many hooks to the bottom that the bait never made it to the floor. The Trigger fish were munching quickly. The fish literally jumped onto the hooks. Well, we all maxed out today and we came back with a ton of fish in the cooler. Jacks, Shark, and a large cooler full of snapper. I am not talking about little snapper, these were big...really big...Hogs.

Of course, every fisherman says the same thing..."you should have seen the fish." I went to take pictures after the catch while still off shore. Of course, the phone had no juice from seeking service all morning. One of our guests did have a camera and we finally got pics once we were cleaning back on shore. But I tell you, "you should have seen the fish."

If he emails me the pics I will prove my tale. If not, Damn..."You should have seen the fish."

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO THIS BLOG>>>HERE IS THE PROOF THAT WE KILLED IT>>>LOOK AT THE PICS>>>TONS OF FISH

Boat Deals Today Are Unbelievable

I learned once that the Asian community views things differently in business and views change as an opportunity. When we drive and come onto a yield sign we step on the brakes. I am told Asians step on the gas. They view today's economy as a major-opportunity.

If you are in Real Estate you could be down because you cannot sell houses, or you can sell houses for what they are worth and actually sell houses.

Well, in the boat industry there is a similar Phenomenon...now is the best time to buy a boat...so why isn't it the best time to sell boats?

It is...

Boat Financing Tips

Times have changed. Boats are not as easy to finance these days. There are a few rules though that if you follow them; you will increase your chances of getting the right terms to fit your needs.

First, if you wish to finance a boat try to find boats that are no more than 10 years old. Banks are shying away from older models now. Older boat must be bought with cash. There are some great deals out there. Tell us what you want and how much you want to spend and we can customize our search to fit your needs.

If a new boat is in your budget and you need financing, there are some great terms and loans out there for buyers. The internet has made it much easier. You can google boat financing and find hundreds of options if you are serious about purchasing a newer model boat or yacht. Again, the internet is a great way to find custom financing to fit your needs. All the sites tell you the terms, the drawbacks, and you can even apply online and have an answer within minutes.

Call us and discuss your needs and we can also suggest some great financing options. We are happy to serve your needs.
