Living the Dream

My whole life has involved the water. I have parents and grandparents who ingrained water in my life. I grew up skiing, boating, fishing, surfing, and wakeboarding in the deepest waters and the best lakes this country offers. I have driven boats since before I could see over the bow. I have crewed on vessels of all sizes and been on nearly every waterway in this country. I prefer the ocean over lakes. The ocean is my home. While living on the Gulf throughout the 90's I fell in love with the Gulf Coast. The Gulf is one of the last waterways in America where the wildlife is still vibrant and thriving. The Fishing is second to none and the diving deep water is epic. The surf, well the surf comes and goes...don't all pretty ladies?

My biggest love is yachts. My grandfather retired Lt. Colonel Ken Patrick taught me everything about the ocean. We crewed for him growing up on several vessels including my favorite: the 40ft Ocean. She was a beautiful Trawler. In that time I learned to maneuver and crew big yachts, sail, dock, fish, clam, crab, and how to endure rough seas in the deepest water in the world (the northwest is home to the Bar which is the roughest ride in the pacific).

We cruised the Puget Sound, The Canadian San Juan Islands, and the Oregon and Canadian coasts. I love the Pacific too. It was a pirate's life my siblings and I lived. Now, it is in my soul.

Finally, after honing my skills for the past four decades: I am opening a yacht rep group on the gulf. My new business is called THIRD COAST MARINE. We will offer new boats from some great lines: Galeon Yachts, Doral Boats, EdgeWater Boats, and used boat of all sizes and brands nationwide.

I want to introduce you to my new business. With some much needed help from David Craig, a 18 year friend and associate; We are opening an office in the Kemah, Texas area off the Gulf by Galveston Bay.

Putting a quality proshop together

Have you ever looked at something and said: "this just won't do." Well, when picking a spot for the next great Wakeboard Proshop in this economy; one must think of simplicity and soul over square footage. Brokership, Office, Shop...all one room. Tiny but mighty?

"Merchandise it to the hilt...from floor to ceiling. Every square inch have something to sell."

Hence, my new wakeboard proshop "Rider's Lodge." This is a shot of the inside...small, quant...is that how you spell Quant? What if it Aint? yea, made a ryhme. Is that how you spell ryhme?

I wish I could claim the thoughts above...random and brilliance. Well, those teachings are of the buddha of boardshops; Tommy Phillips (Tommy's Slalom shop). Is that how you spell Slalom?

What I figured out later is that Tommy knew that blank wall brought up the cost of each square foot and that the total square footage. Merchandised meant more profit for each square foot. It is brilliant. Top scholars teach this at the finest universities for tens of thousands of dollars tuition. Priceless education.

Have you ever been in a really cool beach shop that was empty? No, they are all merchandised to the ceiling... and surfboards on the ceiling...eye candy. The key to selling good retail profit. The other is buying right...maybe later.

If you want the most awesome shop, you also have to associate with the most awesome of riders in the area. Karma will bring them to you. Sell good stuff, pick the right riders, and you will dominate boatshows, sales and promotions, and tournaments. Again, Tommy 101.

Now, I have a ton of work to do. I am making the next great wakeboard proshop.

Did I mention I have an $820,000 listing for a Doral 52' Alegria? Well, I do. If you have outlandish money and want a boat a tenth grader can dock drunk...

Offshore from Corpus

The old saying is: "a bad day fishing is better than the best day at work." Well, today was that day.

First, we arose early to calm and beautiful conditions in the intercoastal waterway here in Corpus Christi. But as all boaters know, the sea will humble you when it wants to and there is nothing you can do about it but hang on and bear it until the ocean let's you go.

Once offshore, we faced 4-5 foot swells and high winds.

Thank God we were in the right boat. We took out one of our Edgewater 268's. It helped us pound through the swells and we made it intack to the oil rigs we sought almost 30 miles off shore.

Did you know that oil rigs make great man-made reefs for thousands of fish and wildlife species to thrive? Bet the environmental whackos don't. There hasn't been a spill in the Gulf since Campeche in the 70's. Fish surround rigs. Any fisherman worth fishing with will take you straight to the rigs to find the best fish: Ling Cod, Snapper, Shark, Jacks, Spanish Macarel, Wahoo, Baracuda, Tarpin, and even Dorado. On the way out there are always Dophin, King, and ton's more.

First cast is always a measure of the day to come. Imagine everytime you drop a Snapper rig of many hooks to the bottom that the bait never made it to the floor. The Trigger fish were munching quickly. The fish literally jumped onto the hooks. Well, we all maxed out today and we came back with a ton of fish in the cooler. Jacks, Shark, and a large cooler full of snapper. I am not talking about little snapper, these were big...really big...Hogs.

Of course, every fisherman says the same thing..."you should have seen the fish." I went to take pictures after the catch while still off shore. Of course, the phone had no juice from seeking service all morning. One of our guests did have a camera and we finally got pics once we were cleaning back on shore. But I tell you, "you should have seen the fish."

If he emails me the pics I will prove my tale. If not, Damn..."You should have seen the fish."

I learned once that the Asian community views things differently in business and views change as an opportunity. When we drive and come onto a yield sign we step on the brakes. I am told Asians step on the gas. They view today's economy as a major-opportunity.

Times have changed. Boats are not as easy to finance these days. There are a few rules though that if you follow them; you will increase your chances of getting the right terms to fit your needs.

First, if you wish to finance a boat try to find boats that are no more than 10 years old. Banks are shying away from older models now. Older boat must be bought with cash.
